Louis Auguste Edmond LEVEQUE(1814 - 1875), after Antoine-Lou - Lot 104
Louis Auguste Edmond LEVEQUE(1814 - 1875), after Antoine-Louis BARYE (1795-1875) Pair of candelabra with children Brown patina bronze, signed LEVEQUE The two-light ormolu candelabra decorated with an eagle and the circular ormolu base decorated with vine leaves; (two-light ormolu candelabra brought back at a later date; small fractures and visible joints on the light arms; slight wear to the patina). H. 29 cm, L. 24.5 cm Related literature: Michel Poletti and Alain Richarme. Barye, catalog raisonné des sculptures. Gallimard, 2000. Reproduced p. 120, cat. no. F 43. These two groups of three intertwined children playing together are inventions by Antoine-Louis Barye, designed around 1850, one of which is at the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore. The signature LEVEQUE on the bronze's terrace refers to the sculptor Edme Levêque, who exhibited at the Salons between 1833 and 1874. To Barye's children, he added shell-shaped bowls that could be used as pocket trays, or light arms. This is a bronze edition by Levêque based on Barye's models.
