JEAN RIVIER (1915-2017) Trained as a watchmaker and jeweler, Jean Rivier discovered ceramics in 1946, first training in Aix-en-Provence before settling in Vallauris, where he worked alongside his partner Juliette Derel. Here, he developed a singular plastic language, based on the exploration of variations in glaze colors - notably blue - and graphic ornamentation, painted or engraved, inspired by the aesthetics of electronic circuits. He then turned his back on his ceramics activity, albeit a recognized one, to pursue his artistic project in Tours, notably in the fields of engraving, illustration and tapestry.
