ALFRED AUGUSTE JANNIOT (1889-1969) - Lot 53
ALFRED AUGUSTE JANNIOT (1889-1969) Antelope, large version, model created circa [1929-1930], the only plaster cast of this size known to date. Sculpture. Proof in patinated plaster. Early edition from the 1930s. Scattered rubbing and small chips. Signed Alfred JANNIOT on the edge of the terrace. Height: 103cm Terrace: 62 x 23cm Acknowledgements: Our warmest thanks go to Mme Anne Demeurisse, universal legatee of the artist and president of the Association Alfred Auguste Janniot, for the valuable information she provided us about this work. Historical background: The Antelope motif is inseparable from Alfred Janniot's work. It first appeared at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, in the group Le Printemps, known as Hommage à Jean Goujon - now in the Musée Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon - created especially for the occasion. The motif was soon treated on its own, in a small version of our sculpture model, before gaining in monumentality around 1929-1930, following a commission from M. Cayrel, mayor of Le Bouscat, for the Jean Jaurès nursery school. During the same period, when creating his famous bas-reliefs to adorn the façade of the Musée des Colonies, created for the 1931 Exposition Coloniale Internationale, Janniot reintroduced the characteristic antelope motif (see bas-relief Récolte du coton au Soudan reproduced in Art et Décoration - N° d'août 1931, p. 62). There are four known bronze proofs of our sculpture model, in these dimensions; two in public institutions and two in private collections; no large-format plaster proofs are known to exist. Public institutions and related works: - École maternelle Jean Jaurès, Le Bouscat - The bronze proof of our sculpture model, commissioned by M. Cayrel, mayor at the time, is held in the school's collections. - École de plein air Méhul, Pantin - A bronze proof of our sculpture model, dated 1936, can be seen in the courtyard of this school.
