Frédéric FEBVRE (1833-1916). Autograph manuscript signed, Le - Lot 165
Frédéric FEBVRE (1833-1916). Autograph manuscript signed, Le Journal d'un comédien. Le Chandelier; notebook of 6pages small in-4 plus title. About Alfred de Musset's play Le Chandelier. Febvre first recounts the premiere of Musset's play on August 10, 1848 at the Théâtre Historique. He gives the cast. Fortunio was played by the actress Rosine Debrou. The rest of the cast was made up of mediocre actors, more accustomed to melodrama than Musset's comedies. The play was revived at the Comédie-Française on June 29, 1850, with a dazzling cast: Samson, Brindeau, Mme Allan, and above all Delaunay in the role of Fortunio, whose performance remained memorable. Another revival on March 15, 1872, with Bressant in the role of Clavaroche, taken over by Febvre himself on August 12. Febvre played the role again in 1877, then in 1882, 1886, and on May 16, 1887 at Delaunay's farewell performance, with Mme Bartet as Jacqueline. Finally, thirty years later, on November 13, 1916, Febvre, retired since 1893, saw a 5th revival, at the Comédie-Française, with Mme Piérat as Fortunio and Cécile Sorel as Jacqueline. He describes the difficulty of performing Le Chandelier, which is full of fantasy, lightness and passion. He recalls that when the play was first performed at the Comédie-Française in 1850, Musset had wanted to give the role of Fortunio to Mme Allan, but she refused, giving her reasons based on what Brindeau, who played Clavaroche, had told him [Febvre had married Brindeau's daughter]. Similarly, Febvre shows that Fortunio's song should be said, not sung (Delaunay said it), and thinks that Mme Piérat "would have met with the same fervor [as Delaunay] in leaving to the sole power of her voice, so engaging, so naturally moved and passionate, the care of translating a poem, whose true music is contained in the charm of her word!"... Attached is another manuscript a.s. on Le Chandelier, November 18, 1916, dedicated to Louis Schneider, on the occasion of the revival of the play (3p. in-4). Plus 2 L.A.S. to Alexandre Dumas fils and Philoclès Regnier.
