Édouard Warschawsky, known as EDY-LEGRAND (1892-1970) illustrator and painter. 21 L.A.S. or cartes a.s., 1948-1952, to Yvette ROSENFELD; 30 pages in-4, and 14 pages oblong in-8 (on the back of illustrated postcards, some depicting his works), 4 envelopes and 3 addresses, with 2 drawn maps. Interesting correspondence to a friend. Traveling through Europe, particularly Italy, via the Alps and then Morocco, the painter shares his impressions of his travels, with long reflections on his works in progress and various contracts with publishers. [Wassen] September 1, 1948. A car breakdown delays him by three days, but he hopes to be in Milan the following day, "where extremely important confrontations await me"... Rabat December 26, 1948. He leads an exhausting life, "and I too feel, at times, a cracking carcass. This month I've had to churn out: 50 pages written for my Bible commentaries, 14 large drawings and 4 smaller ones for the Bible [La Bible, illustrée par Edy-Legrand, 4 tomes, Club du Livre de Marseille, 1950]; 60 for my U.S.A. treatise... And we're coming to the end of the year, when I should have sent 88 plates to New York by the 31st"... He talks about his friend Mariette Lydis "who certainly has a lot of talent, even if she has commercialized it a little, with prints I don't approve of"... He goes on to give details of the progress of his work on the Bible: "But sometimes I think I'll succumb before then, like the horse that falls a few meters before the post! Assisi May 7, 1950, a fine journey, via Genoa and Siena "to the admirable primitives". In Assisi, "little art, but an overwhelming Roman display for the fragile image of poor St. Francis, whose moving presence is nonetheless to be found in small monasteries nearby"... Vatican May 14 1950. Reception by the Pope, to whom he was able to present a copy of his illustrated Bible: "Moving and unforgettable moments!"... Rabat December 27, 1950. "From Mogador onwards, on the road, I came into contact with the North and its freezing rains, and became increasingly unacclimatized - both morally and physically"... January 11 1951. "Here I am, in the midst of carrying out my trip to the South, and, as always, horribly disturbed by a thousand chores"... He devotes his rare free time to painting... Wednesday March 12, 1952. He arrived in Morocco "absolutely exhausted"... He talks about his finances and his income from publications... "As for advertising drawings, of course I'll do them: I did work for Guerlain (60,000 f a plate) in '49! And I'm all the more armed for advertising since I've been doing it for 10 years"...
