"The sympathies that come to me from all quarters, [...] redouble the infinite gratitude I owe to Monsieur de Lamartine, my dear master. Who would have told me, when I was writing the poem Mirèio among the peasants and for the peasants, that the whole of France would be so indulgent of my songs?... Truly, God does with man what he will.... let us give him thanks!"... He adds that "M. Roumanille, bookseller in Avignon [...] will send Mirèio free of charge to anyone who sends him the amount (5fr. 80)"...
