Émile COMBES (1835-1921). L.A.S. to a lady; 1page in-4. "I am, moreover, the most sentimental politician imaginable, despite the apparent contradiction between this statement and my ministerial actions [......] If it were not for the imperative duty incumbent upon me to continue and defend the politics I have practiced, I would retreat with delight to the bosom of my family to experience only the delightful emotions that are its essence [...] What I am writing at the moment comes from the heart and is in keeping with the inner movements that prevail within me". Attached are a set of signed autograph manuscripts of poems: 1861 A ma fiancée and Octobre 1861 A ma jeune fiancée (2 different versions, 3 pages in-8) and Le Poitrinaire, August 1853 (3 pages ¼ in-4, copy attached).
