L.S., Saint-Germain en Laye June 30, 1598, to "cappitaines establiz a la garde de nostre ville de Rouen"; countersigned by Louis Potier; 1page in-fol., address on verso (paper a little creased). "Dieu nous ayant donné sa paix nostre plus grand soing desormais sera de faire en sorte que noz bons sujets respirent et se remvent de leurs longs travaulx en la liberté dicelle". He therefore ordered the Duke of Montpensier "to make an incontinant cessation of the guards at the gates of our city of Rouen, so that you may be relieved of the burden of duty you must have, and may, in the same freedom as your other fellow citizens, go about your business and trade"... Attached is a L.S., Paris January 2, 1603, to the treasurers of France in the generality of Lyon (1p. in-fol., adr., laminated with split), concerning the collection of the taillon.
