Interesting cylinder seal featuring an astral representation of the constellation Orion. White stone. Babylonian art, circa 3rd millennium Height: 5.1 cm Provenance : Former collection of M. Gaston Forgues (the owners' grandfather). Acquired at auction and from Vinchon between 1960 and 1980. By inheritance. Among Babylonians, Orion is "MULSIPA.ZI.AN.NA": "The faithful celestial shepherd, shepherd of Anu". This explains the presence of a caprid engraving.
