Ottoman-style ewer, France, second half of the 19th century - Lot 199
Ottoman-style ewer, France, second half of the 19th century Ewer with a pear-shaped body flanked by a handle and a long sinuous spout, set on a pedestal and topped by a high neck marked by a bulbous ring and closed by a metal-hinged lid with bulbous grip. Ceramic with underglaze polychrome decoration of two mandorles, one featuring a figure in caftan, the other an architectural aedicule. The lid features an all-round floral design, and the neck is adorned with tongues. Spikes of gilding enhance the polychromy. A three-leaf branch painted under the base. Height: 35.5 cm Chips at the base of the lid and foot. Provenance : Former collection of Michael Pacha Portakalian (1842-1897), high-ranking official at the court of Sultan Abdulhamid II, then by descent. Although the vegetal mark under the base has not been identified, the existence of ewers with identical decoration and bearing the Samson mark suggests that this piece may also have come from the workshops of the French ceramist. Examples have sold at auction in recent years, such as at Christie's South Kensington, April 10, 2014, no. 237, or at Artcurial, Paris, May 21, 2024, lot 186.
