Edvard Munch (1863-1944) (after) - Lot 292
Edvard Munch (1863-1944) (after) Two Female Heads against the Moon. 1913. Autograph by Auguste Clot. 440x270mm. Woll, app. IV, no. 8. Color print. Very fine and fresh proof on thin white laid paper. Scattered short handling creases. Very wide margins. Framed (not examined out of frame). On verso, exhibition label "Maîtres de l'art français" at Randers Kunstmuseum, Denmark, 1998. Provenance: Estate of Auguste Clot (1858-1936), lithographic printer. Munch drew this subject and sent it to Jules Meier-Graefe for a lithographic transcription for the Germinal portfolio, but the drawing reached the publisher too late. In 1913, Meier-Graefe entrusted the drawing to the dealer Gutbier in Dresden for an edition of 50 lithographs, on the express condition that Clot in Paris would print them. Munch was not informed of this by letter from Meier-Graefe until August 1913. He did not wish to sign the plate, which was produced without his knowledge. It was nevertheless included in an exhibition of Munch's work at the Gutbier gallery in autumn 1913, and reproduced in the catalog.
