LEVASSEUR (Victor). - Lot 65
LEVASSEUR (Victor). Atlas national illustré des 89 Départements et des Possessions de l France. Divided by Arrondissements, Cantons and Communes, with the layout of all roads, railroads and canals. Paris : Pelissier, 1869. - In-folio, dark green half-chagrin, green percaline boards framed with cold-stamped fillets, gilt title to center front board, smooth modern percaline spine with original rebacked bone (publisher's binding). New edition of this famous atlas, first published in 1833 and reissued by various publishers until 1872. The work was carried out by engineer-geographer Victor Levasseur (1800-1870), using data from the Cadastre, the Dépôt de la Guerre and the Ponts et Chaussées. The maps are decorated with engravings featuring statistics, historical annotations and illustrations typical of the departments and colonies. They highlight roads, railroads and waterways, while departments are subdivided into arrondissements, cantons and communes. This copy includes a handsome engraved title and 99 of the 102 maps. Missing are the maps of the Seine et Marne and Seine et Oise departments, as well as that of Martinique. It has the particularity of offering 3 maps with engraved decorations in color (Ardennes, Finistère and Savoie). Binding restored, original spine restored, endpapers renewed. Some wear and tear. The maps are perfectly preserved. The first map and the title are partly unbound.
