From the author: "Alla Societa Geologica di Francia l'autore di lei membro".
Paolo Savi's interest in zoology, well established in the early years of his career, took a new turn after his meeting with Georges Cuvier in 1828. This event marked the beginning of his decisive move towards the earth sciences.
That same year, Savi undertook his first geological excursions in Tuscany, soon followed in 1829 by study trips to the Monti Pisani, the Apennines and the Apuan Alps. These explorations gave rise to his first published works in geology, between 1829 and 1833.
In 1830, the Grand Duke of Tuscany invited him to join the group of notables accompanying him on a trip to Germany. Savi devoted much of his time to examining the Carboniferous terrains of Saxony and Bohemia, visiting mines and exchanging views with geologists and mining engineers.
In the following years, he intensified his fieldwork, exploring Elba and Lunigiana, and publishing the Carte géologique des Monti Pisani in 1833. It was on this occasion that he received his first official commission, marking the beginning of his recognition as a geologist.
