GIDE (André). - Lot 125
GIDE (André).
Dostoyevsky (Articles et causeries).
Paris: Librairie Plon, [1923]. - In-12, red half-chagrin, smooth spine decorated, untrimmed, cover preserved (binding from the second half of the 20th century).
Partly first edition.
Copy of the current edition, enriched with 2 AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR.
The first, mounted at the head, is addressed to a young lady and dated Cuverville, March 29, 1933. One page in-8, it begins with a meeting he was unable to attend. He adds: "But what is much more important to me is your concern to consider my books as works of art and poetry. It seems to me that this is the only way to talk about them in a healthy way. I had warned Pierre-Quint: his misquotation would take precedence, as it always does. Here's my exact phrase: "I am never more than what I think I am...". Which has a completely different meaning."
The second letter, undated and one page in-12, is addressed to a lady whom he informs that he's leaving for the U.S.S.R. and won't be able to take a serious look at his manuscript: "The best thing would be to send it directly to the N.R.F. where the regular readers are conscientious - and where I'll support it as best I can."
Spine faded. A few small tears and soiling to cover.
Georges Auguste Dormeuil, with bookplate.
