LEVI-STRAUSS (Claude). Tristes Tropiques. Paris: Librairie Plon, [1955]. -In-8, paperback, illustrated dust jacket. First edition of the most famous work by anthropologist and ethnologist Claude Lévi-Strauss (1908-2009), published in the "Terre Humaine" collection. It is illustrated with a map and over 50 full-page and in-text drawings, as well as 63 photographs. There is no large paper edition. Press copy, complete with first-edition dust jacket, illustrated with a portrait of a native woman with a painted face, based on a drawing of a Caduveo woman. This copy is marked "6e mille" on the dust jacket. It is complete with the advertisement leaflet at the end and enhanced with the trailer. A few small marginal tears to the dust jacket, otherwise a very well preserved copy.
