BARBIER (George). - LE ROUX (Hugues). - Lot 154
BARBIER (George). - LE ROUX (Hugues).
Makeda Queen of Sheba. Ethiopian chronicle translated for the first time from "Gheez" into French, based on a manuscript belonging to their majesties the Negus of Ethiopia.
Paris: Goupil & Cie, Manzi, Joyant & Cie, 1914. - In-4, leaves, in publisher's printed flap folder.
Very rare edition of this chronicle, said to have been translated by Hugues Le Roux from an Ethiopian manuscript, printed in only 100 numbered copies on Hollande paper.
Its interest lies in its illustration, comprising 46 compositions: 7 by George BARBIER (a header and 6 hors-texts), 33 by Louis POPINEAU (header, lettering and culs-de-lampe) and 6 by Michel ENGUEDA-WORK (6 hors-texts). Each hors-texte and bandeau is preceded by a captioned serpente.
Reinforcement at cover extremities. Heavy foxing, as usual with this book. The serpente on the last plate is missing, replaced by a duplicate of that on the headband on page 47.
Provenance: N. Harwich, with bookplate.
