Deposited by Myriam Vogel at the Museum of Jewish Art and History, this 1931 oil on canvas is one of Mané-Katz’s masterpieces. Of very large format—unusual for a Montparnasse artist living in extreme poverty at the time—*La lecture* is an emblematic work by the artist. In this composition, Mané-Katz depicts a group of workers gathered around a Yiddish newspaper with the same fervor as a gathering of rabbis around the Talmud. It is a scene imbued with spirituality and power, reinforced by the red and ochre color palette and the intensity of the figures.
