[SCHWARTZBARD TRIAL] - Lot 140
[SCHWARTZBARD TRIAL] A collection of 19 pages of photographs and two sheets of bilingual text in Yiddish and French, contained in a folder featuring an illustration by Chagall. Against a black background, an angel armed with a sword hovers above unfurled Torah scrolls. In the center, Schwartzbard’s name in Hebrew. Complete with its closure strap. (Reinforced folder with missing sections and creases). Also included: A set of 8 issues of the newspaper “Le Trident” entirely devoted to the Schwartzbard trial. Issues ranging from October 19, 1927, to No. 8 of October 31, 1927. Issues No. 7 and 8 are duplicates. (Folds and normal wear and tear). On May 26, 1926, on Rue Racine in Paris, Samuel Schwartzbard, an anarchist activist and Jewish refugee from Bessarabia, shot and killed Simon Petliura, a Ukrainian independence activist in exile, with seven bullets. He justified his act by claiming he wanted to avenge his fellow Jews in Ukraine, who had been murdered during pogroms that, according to him, were instigated by Simon Petliura in 1919.
