[WORLD WAR II - PHOTOGRAPH] - Lot 218
[WORLD WAR II - PHOTOGRAPH] Arrest in the Warsaw Ghetto Vintage contact print, with a typewritten caption pasted on the back. A group of prisoners, with a Jewish child in the foreground holding his hands in the air. On the right, armed German soldiers are threatening him. 16.5 x 23 cm This anonymous photograph was taken by a German soldier during the suppression of the Jewish uprising that took place in the Warsaw Ghetto from April 19 to May 16, 1943. This photograph appears in an album of fifty-three images appended to the report that the SS officer in charge of operations, Jürgen Stroop, sent to his superiors, Krüger and Himmler. This photograph would later (beginning in the 1970s and 1980s) become one of the most famous images of that period. In fact, it remained classified until the Nuremberg trials, where it was entered into the record as evidence for the prosecution.
