[ENLUMINURE] - Lot 4
[ENLUMINURE]
Leaf excerpt from an antiphonary.
In Latin, ornate manuscript on parchment; music in aquitaine neumatic notation.
France, Lyon? or southwest? circa 1200.
Binding damaged, recto in good condition, verso poorly legible.
Dimensions: 250x195mm
Minuscule caroline script, brown ink, rubrics in red, large cadelated initials, musical staves drawn in brown ink, one line drawn in red, large initials painted in red, notated music, neumes
From the 13th century onwards, square notation was definitively adopted. From the twelfth century onwards, neumes were stretched and distorted (as in the present leaf), evolving into square or Gregorian notation. This is a good example of late Aquitaine neumatic notation.
We note the Magnificat antiphon: "Quod uni ex minimis meis...": Lenten Office?
