[ENLUMINURE] - Lot 15
[ENLUMINURE] Leaf from a Book of Hours (Chartres usage?), Calendar (month of February). In Latin, illuminated manuscript on parchment, humanist script, cord motif around the text. France, Paris, circa 1520. Follower of Jean Pichore (active in Paris, 1490-1521). Dimensions: 162x106mm The liturgical use of Chartres is suggested by the calendar's inclusion of the feast of the dedication of Notre-Dame de Chartres (October 17) on a related sheet. The cordelière surrounding the text no doubt echoes a Franciscan devotion (the Cordeliers) or a particular devotion of the commissioner, the cordelière also being a sign of friendship and fidelity. The general aesthetic of this leaflet recalls the productions of the first quarter of the 16th century, around artists such as Jean Pichore or members of the Étienne Colaud group. A number of related leaves from these Hours can be found in private collections in England: calendar, month of October; leaf from the Hours of the Virgin, none; see also Charles Puckett, Akron, Ohio, leaf from the Hours of the Holy Spirit, matins.
