[MANUSCRIT]. [RELIGION]. [JESUITS] - Lot 29

[MANUSCRIT]. [RELIGION]. [JESUITS] Enchiridion orationum... Collection of prayers written in a Jesuit environment. In Latin and German, manuscript on parchment. Germany, 1625-1650 (necessarily after the canonization of St. Ignatius Loyola and St. Francis Xavier in 1622). 158ff, preceded and followed by two endpapers, cursive and Roman script in brown ink, ornate title and ornate cul-de-lampe, pen-and-ink drawings. Contemporary black shagreen binding, smooth spine, marbled paper countersleeves and endpapers, brass clasps (period binding). Size: 83x70mm This small collection of prayers is preserved in its original condition, from its binding to the texts it contains. A Jesuit origin can be deduced from the presence in the litanies of saints such as St. Ignatius and St. Francis Xavier, both saints honored by the Jesuits. A close friend of Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), Saint Francis Xavier (1506-1552), "Apostle of the Indies", was one of the co-founders of the Society of Jesus. Saint Ignatius of Loyola was also canonized by Pope Gregory XV in 1622.
