Attributed to Ernestine CAROUGET (active in Paris in the mid-19th century) Self-portrait Original canvas 69 x 55.5 cm Unframed Monogrammed on the left "EC" (linked); bears a recent inscription in blue ink on the reverse of the stretcher "EC Etienne Chavanne" (E and C linked) Paintings by Ernestine Carouget, portrait painter, are rare (only one painting is known, signed and dated 1849, presented at the 2009 Dogny Auction). The artist's attire and the furniture date our painting to the 1830s. Ernestine Carouget would have painted her self-portrait as a portraitist some ten years before exhibiting at the Salon in 1845.
