Tapestry from the Royal Manufactory of Aubusson
Part of the series known as "Rural Amusements"
Based on designs by Jacques Nicolas Juillard (1719–1790)
18th century, circa 1770
200 x 350 cm
Charming subject, woven in wool and silk, with old restorations and patches; border missing, but may have been made without a border to be placed in a wood frame. Numerous open reinforcement stitches that need to be tightened; wear and tear.
A similar tapestry belonging to the town hall of Charlieu (in the Loire department) is reproduced in Pascal-François Bertrand’s book, Aubusson, Tapisseries of the Enlightenment, Splendors of the Royal Manufactory, Supplier to Europe in the 18th Century, 2013, fig. 253, p. 187.
