Marie-Joseph CHÉNIER (1764-1811). P.S., 25 germinal VIII (April 15, 1800); 1page oblong in-4 partly printed on Portique Républicain letterhead, small vignette (split at fold).
Chénier introduces himself to the Société du Portique républicain, founded in 1799 by Piis to mobilize the arts in the service of the Republic.
The form is partly filled in by Cournand for Chénier: his name, age (36), birth in "Constantinople", address "rue des Moulins", profession: "member of the Tribunate", and literary titles: "de l'Institut, auteur de belles tragédies et autres ouvrages de littérature".
The candidacy was presented by three members who signed: Antoine Cournand, Michel de Cubières and Jean-Claude Méhée (de la Touche). The commissioners were Berth, Masson and Dubroca. Chénier was admitted on Floreal 23, as indicated by secretary Édouard-Thomas Simon, who signed.
