Edouard DRUMONT (1844-1917). Autograph manuscript signed, L'Antisémitisme, Rothschild et Puybaraud, [1895]; 4pages in-fol. cut into 15 numbered strips for printing.
Article published on the front page of his newspaper La Libre Parole on September 16, 1895. Numerous erasures and corrections.
"No one will ever know the expenditure of nervous strength I was obliged to make during the first year of this Libre Parole, which had to make its way through all the associated hatreds, all the efforts of coalesced Jewry. The first year in particular was particularly harsh"... Drumont refers here to the bombs thrown by anarchists against Rothschild: "My impression is that this unfortunate Rothschild, who has stamped so many people, has allowed himself to be stamped again". Drumont sees this as a maneuver by the government to divert attention from the Madagascar expedition, thanks to Puibaraud's "police canailleries"... If Drumont had his way, "Rothschild and the fifty representatives of cosmopolitan Finance would be arrested" and "judged according to all legal forms with an impartiality that will not exclude celerity. [...] This is what is reduced to the alleged excitements of these Antisemites whom a press devoted to Israel portrays as energetics and bloodthirsty tigers. [...] Never has an Antisemite spoken of massacring Rothschild and engaging in extra-legal violence against him. [...] It is the moderation and wisdom of these ideas that have united all good Frenchmen around Antisemitism. [...] Our fathers, despite their faults, their errors, their vices, made us, gave us a homeland [...] The Jews, who entered this homeland while it was being founded, abused our generosity, our trust, our humanity; they soiled everything, stole everything, corrupted everything, tainted everything in our country. [...] The anti-Semitic movement has moral causes and at the same time such deep economic causes; it is so much the expression of the awakening of all consciences, of the indignation of all the despoiled, of the suffering of all the oppressed, that nothing could stop it"... Rothschild wants to draw attention to himself, through false plots, with the help of the policeman Puibaraud...
We enclose 3 L.A.S.: December 28, 1878, about his book Les Fêtes nationales; June 24, 1900, requesting M. Piot's memoir on depopulation; - July 28, 1912, to Vergnet, about his work as a journalist for La Libre Parole: "I've been writing articles since I was 18. I'm at the end of my tether, and despite the operation my eyes are still very bad; I'm the only one who doesn't have a vacation"... Plus a visiting card a.s., about an article on Gallifet's Jewish origins.
