Paul VERLAINE (1844-1896). L.A.S., Paris February 3, 1869, t - Lot 148
Paul VERLAINE (1844-1896). L.A.S., Paris February 3, 1869, to Victor Hugo; 1 1/2 pages in-12.
Precious letter from Verlaine to his master Victor Hugo.
"I take the liberty of recommending to my dear and revered master the enclosed letter and the pamphlet entitled Chance which is addressed to him at the same time. It concerns a young artist of talent and conscience whom illustrious encouragement would make the happiest of men, and a writer whose name and merit are not, I believe, unknown to my dear master."
[This is the brochure Le Hasard by Amédée de Ponthieu (1840-1871) dedicated to the painter Jules Péaron (1836-1882), author of a famous portrait-charge of Verlaine].
At the top of the letter, Hugo inscribed a large r, showing that he had replied. [This reply has not been found, but on March 15, Hugo wrote to Péaron about Ponthieu's brochure. On April 16, he thanked Verlaine for sending him Les Fêtes galantes].
