[Louis II de Bourbon, prince de condé (1621-1686)]. Handwrit - Lot 240
[Louis II de Bourbon, prince de condé (1621-1686)]. Handwritten letter, Paris December 15, 1686; 10 pages in-4 (wet). The death of the Grand Condé by a member of his House, perhaps his Command Secretary Gérard Coquart. On Wednesday the 11th, the very day of his death, the Prince, feeling his illness increasing, questioned the author of this letter, who confirmed that the doctors found him in great peril: "j'adjoutay que je scavois par experience qu'il s'est connu mieux dans toutes ses maladies que les medecins n'avoient pu le faire"... The Prince then asked him to send for Father Deschamps, his son and the Prince de Conti, and dictated his arrangements for the principal officers and servants. "While I was working on these arrangements, he had Father Bergier write a letter to the King, the reading of which caused him to shed many tears; He read all the way through the arrangements he had ordered for me, and as he didn't find my name in them, he returned them to me, saying things so obliging and so tender for me that I couldn't help showing the pain I felt, and to satisfy him, I added to this letter that he asked Monseigneur le Duc and Monseigneur le Duc de Bourbon to have the same confidence in me as they knew he had, and the same friendship for me [....] and he signed"... As Father Deschamps was late in coming, the Prince confessed to Father Bergier, took communion and received extreme unction. Then the Duke arrived, and the Prince had the joy of learning that the King had "heartily forgiven Monseigneur le Prince de Conty"; the latter arrived, and then Fr. Deschamps, "which made him say that he had nothing more to desire in this world"... The Prince's final exhortations... "He heard the beginning of the prayers of the dying, and passed on before they were finished, almost unnoticed"...
