MARIE-CAROLINE-CHARLOTTE (1752-1814) Queen of Naples and the - Lot 352
MARIE-CAROLINE-CHARLOTTE (1752-1814) Queen of Naples and the Two Sicilies, sister of Marie-Antoinette. L.S. partly autograph, Caserta May 18, 1793, to a friend; 2 pages in-4 (small stains). Moving letter about Marie-Antoinette. ... "I hope with you [...] that providence will not leave its work imperfect, and that having blessed the beginnings of this campaign in such a striking manner, it will deign to end with it all our evils, and especially those inexpressible of my unfortunate sister, and her unfortunate family. [...] I dare not speak to you of my unfortunate sister, she is drinking the cup of bitterness to the dregs, and is experiencing the worst that human nature can endure; greatness and pleasure have passed like a dream, and all that remains is pain, bitter sorrow and cruel memories"... Attached is the autograph signature (cut out) of Charles-Emmanuel III, King of Sardinia.
