Jean-Siffrein MAURY (1746-1817) priest, deputy of the clergy - Lot 363
Jean-Siffrein MAURY (1746-1817) priest, deputy of the clergy of Péronne to the Estates General; emigrated to Rome, cardinal, he rallied to Napoleon who made him archbishop of Paris. L.A.S., Rome September 3, 1794, to Marquis de Bombelles "former ambassador of the King of France to the Republic of Venice" in Regensburg; 2pages in-4, addressed. After his promotion to the cardinalate, thanking Bombelles "de la joye qu'elle cause à votre cœur françois". He praises Bombelles' resignation as proof of his loyalty: "it was easy to see that the Oath was an act of felony against the King; but not everyone understood as you did that this baseness would only delay the disgrace of the ministers of our unfortunate Louis 16 by a few months; that the dominant party wanted to usurp all the jobs, and that the only thing left to lose was honor by delaying his retirement". Good Frenchmen must stand together, and Maury will support the Wymm knight that Bombelles sends him. And he recommends Ferrand, a member of the Paris parliament: "I would be delighted to obtain for him, his son and his teacher an asylum in your rich Benedictine abbey. It's a question of providing bread for one of our nation's most esteemed men"... Enclosed is a print: Messe du 14 Juillet 1790, célébrée par l'abbé Maury, de fameuse mémoire (Paris, Simon & Jacob-Sion, 1790 ; in-8).
