Jewelry box - Lot 314
Jewelry box Attributed to John Joseph Mechi in brown leather, with compartmentalized interior on two storage levels. The lid is monogrammed with interlaced letters "MCAT" (?). The box is fitted with a lock stamped "BRAMAH PATENT" and bears, on the inside edge, an engraved inscription: "I. J. Mechi, 112 Regent St.". Presented in a brown leather case signed "A.T.R.". Mid 19th century. With key. H. 8 cm, W. 31 cm, D. 23 cm Accents and wear. The locks marked "BRAMAH PATENT" are copies made after the 1812 expiration of the original patent by Joseph Bramah, inventor of the famous tamper-proof locks. John Joseph Mechi joined forces with Charles Bazin in 1859. MECHI & BAZIN" appeared on their designs. But when Charles Bazin died in 1865 at the age of 40, ownership of the company reverted to Mechi. The store at 4 Leadenhall Street closed and all business was transferred to its Regent Street address. However, it wasn't until 1869 that Mechi officially reverted to the Mechi & Bazin name. Given its provenance, this box probably belonged to Marie de Sartiges.
