Antonio Fantuzzi (active circa 1540) - Lot 12
Antonio Fantuzzi (active circa 1540) Landscape. Circa 1543. Etching after Rosso Fiorentino. 230x195mm. Bartsch 30; Zerner 36; Jenkins A.F. 36. Proof on strong laid paper of the central landscape only, incomplete with the engraved frame with garlands and two large figures - with only the lower part including a small frame and the two horizontal garlands. On verso, old inscription in pen and sepia ink and small remnants of glue in the corners. The landscape, here the only survivor of the complete engraved composition, is in the Flemish style as always in Fantuzzi's work. It replaces the central scene in the composition L'Ignorance chassée in the Galerie François I of the Château de Fontainebleau. This landscape is inspired by the stuccowork of the gallery. It aims to transform Rosso's decorative apparatus into an ornamental frame.
