Ibsen's drama was given on November 9, 1897 at the Nouveau Théâtre. Munch had met the playwright in 1891 at the Grand Hotel in Christiania. Here, he renders an austere, almost hallucinatory image. The playwright's men are the beams that emanate from his double, the lighthouse in the background.
