Pair of bottle-shaped porcelain vases with polychrome “Famil - Lot 69
Pair of bottle-shaped porcelain vases with polychrome “Famille Rose” decoration and coats of arms, China, East India Company, Yongzheng period (1723–1735) A pair of bottle-shaped vases with a globular body and a long, slightly flared cylindrical neck, made of white porcelain finely painted with “Famille Rose” enamels. The body is adorned with a rich design of blooming peonies, chrysanthemums, plum blossoms, small wildflowers, and flower buds connected by leafy scrollwork, rendered in a delicate palette of pink, blue, green, yellow, and brown. At the base of the short neck is a wide frieze of pink geometric latticework accented with floral medallions alternating between peonies and foliage, while the neck itself is adorned with a scattering of flowers in bouquets distributed along its entire height. The rim is accented by several concentric friezes in gold and iron-red, composed of stylized spire, rosette, and ovate motifs characteristic of export porcelain from the Yongzheng period. On one side of each vase is a large polychrome-painted coat of arms highlighted with gold, surrounded by a broad mantling of rocaille acanthus. The arms: “Gules, a saltire Or flanked by four towers Argent; over all, azure with a silver anchor,” surmounted by a helmet topped with a crest: “a golden griffin’s head and neck, set between a golden and gules volute.” This heraldic ensemble is attributed to the Neufville family, the German or Dutch branch of the Neufville family of Artois, and attests to a specific commission intended for the European market. Height: 27 cm Drilled holes, Christie’s labels.
