SÉCLIER, PHILIPPE (1958-) [signed] El camino de Tulahuén. En busca de Sergio Larain. LOM Ediciones, Santiago, 2014. In-4 (24 x 17 cm). First edition, paperback, signed in 2014 by Philippe Séclier on the title page. 64 pages. Illustrated softcover. The book is dedicated to the quest for the legendary Chilean photographer Sergio Larraín. Through texts, accounts, and photographs, Philippe Séclier recounts his journey to Chile and his encounters with the artist living in seclusion in Tulahuén. “A rectangle. It was in a rectangle that I saw him for the first time. He raised a blind, and his gaunt face appeared, fleetingly, beneath one of the windows of his house. It was December 5, 2000, in Tulahuén. I haven’t forgotten a single detail of that first encounter with Sergio Larraín. Nor have I forgotten a thing about the second one. It was May 22, 2001, in Ovalle. It took me all this time to reopen the blue box where I kept his letters, his books, the newspaper clippings about his unique exhibitions, the notes I took during our conversations—or those I had with people I met at the time—and even the photos I took as I set out to find him. My first trip to Chile was in 1998. At that time, I was photographing ports all over the world. That spring, I dropped anchor in Valparaíso. I spent fifteen days in this city “hanging from the hills,” in the words of Pablo Neruda, which Sergio Larraín immortalized in the 1950s and 1960s. But, by a curious twist of fate, it wasn’t until I returned to Paris a few weeks later that I discovered his work. The Fnac Montparnasse was exhibiting the photographs he had taken in London during the winter of 1958–1959. I had never seen anything like it: melancholic images, tilted, perpetually off-balance, oscillating between wakefulness and suspicion, between darkness and shadow. Philippe Séclier."
