Nicolas-François CANARD (1754–1833), mathematician and econo - Lot 11
Nicolas-François CANARD (1754–1833), mathematician and economist. 2 letters, Moulins, 15 Pluviôse and 23 Germinal (February 4 and April 13, 1802), to Citizen Morand, professor at the École Centrale in Paris; 3 pages, in-4 format, with an address. Regarding his reinstatement as a professor at the École Centrale in Moulins. – February 4: “Here at last, Citizen and friend, is a favorable opportunity to resume my position; the professor of general grammar has just died, so they can either appoint me to that position or restore mine to me through an exchange, but I still fear refusal from the investigative jurors, who are my sworn enemies”; he asks Morand to intervene with the minister so that he may acknowledge the injustice done to him. – April 13: He learns that he has been awarded the prize for the second time at the Institute and that he has been appointed “to the chair of general grammar following the change in the selection committee. “Citizen Roederer invited the prefect to appoint me without a competitive examination, and he wrote to me personally to inform me of this”; he asks Morand to arrange for the printing of his award-winning treatise [Memoir on the Improvement of the Jury, 1802], to offer it to the highest-bidding bookseller for a print run of 2,500 or 3,000 copies, and he recalls that he sold his *Principles of Political Economy* at a rate of 42ll per sheet”; he also asks him to intervene with his printer, Buisson: “I very much fear that he has swindled me out of the second edition of my first work,” and to make him understand “that it is in his best interest to act fairly toward me, because I have several other works to sell”…Finally, he asks him to proofread his galleys and to convey his regards to Citizen Lakanal, from whom he is awaiting a letter. Attached is a P.S. as a mathematics teacher, Moulins, 15 Fructidor V (September 1, 1797), certifying the prize awarded to Citizen Bongarel for his progress in the mathematics course (1 p., in-12, partially printed),
