Victor de Riquetti, Marquis de MIRABEAU (1715–1789). Autogra - Lot 70
Victor de Riquetti, Marquis de MIRABEAU (1715–1789). Autograph letter, Paris, December 27, 1763, to Count Jean-Baptiste de Lasteyrie du Saillant, at his château in Le Saillant; 1¼ pages, in-4 format, address, black wax seal bearing the coat of arms (broken).
A lovely letter to the father-in-law of his daughter, Élisabeth-Charlotte. [Élisabeth-Charlotte de Riquetti de Mirabeau (1747–1821) had just married, on November 7, Charles de Lasteyrie du Saillant (1740–1815).]
“The same affection with which you honor my daughter, my dear cousin, I feel in full for your son. I feel that it is in him that all our hopes reside, and that it is upon him that the honorable burden of your house must now rest. I repeat to you that he is my first choice among my children [...] I will see my daughter only in him; I shall measure my feelings for her only by those he deems he owes her; it is thus, I believe, that we shall mutually ensure the happiness of our children and that I shall show you my gratitude for your kindness and friendship toward my daughter”…
After discussing the dowry, he said of his sons: “They are still only children”...
