Jean-Charles-Léonard Simonde de SISMONDI (1773–1842). Letter - Lot 140
Jean-Charles-Léonard Simonde de SISMONDI (1773–1842). Letter from the author, Chênes near Geneva, August 3, 1841, to Messrs. Furne & Co., booksellers in Paris; 3 pages, in-8 format, with address. He did indeed receive three copies of his *History of the Italian Republics*, a new ten-volume edition, but upon attempting to have one copy bound, he noticed that pages were missing from Volume VI of all three copies: “I kindly ask you to send them to me immediately. This delay grieves me greatly; the copy I was having bound was intended for a relative who is dear to my heart.” He regrets not having been consulted during the preparation of this edition: “It seems to me that I could have suggested subjects for the engravings that adorn it which were less foreign to the work. Had I been consulted, I would also have insisted that you retain the chapter numbering I had approved. By starting over as you have done in each volume, you make it impossible for those who wish to consult the original based on a reference they find in another author—using the numbering from the original edition—to find their way back to it”… He hopes that the copy sent to London is complete…
