Anne-Robert-Jacques TURGOT (1727–1781). Letter from Limoges, - Lot 160
Anne-Robert-Jacques TURGOT (1727–1781). Letter from Limoges, June 2, 1772, to his former secretary Antoine-Bernard Caillard; 3 pages, in-4. He is concerned about Caillard’s diplomatic career and would like to know if “you have been able to foresee a position for yourself, if anyone has looked into the matter, and if your salary will continue”… He may also return to the Limousin… Turgot is about to leave for the mountains and will be “on the road all month. I will, however, stop by here after visiting the workshops in Bourganeuf,” where one can write to him. He is building up his libraries in Limoges and Paris and asks: “a large, bound 8vo volume titled *Medicine of the Armies*. I left it in Paris because I thought I had a duplicate in Limoges.” He is going to send him “three brochures on the arts from the Academy that I had duplicates of. […] I have here the first seven volumes of Voltaire’s Questions on the Encyclopedia; I need the 8th and 9th,” but he will get them when they “have dropped to the going price of the other Voltaire volumes, since I have read them and am in no hurry”; the Paris series also needs to be completed. “I have the duplicate Pelopides in Paris, and I wouldn’t mind having one here for the curious folks in Limoges.” Finally, he asks for a pamphlet on venereal diseases…
