Anne-Robert-Jacques TURGOT (1727–1781). L.S., Paris, Novembe - Lot 168
Anne-Robert-Jacques TURGOT (1727–1781). L.S., Paris, November 22, 1774, to Mr. Mollet, salt tax inspector for Provence in Aix; 1½ pages, folio. He had received the memorandum in which Mollet complained that his travel expenses from 1772 had not been paid by the General Collector of Taxes in Marseille “on the grounds that the King’s statement of accounts had not been sent to him.” This is true, and Turgot will issue orders for this document to be sent “without delay and for you to be paid at the same times as in previous years.” As for the requested compensation, “it cannot be granted. The Edict of February 1771, the provisions of which you are invoking, does not authorize it.” This Edict concerns reimbursements to officials for their advances and interest, not compensation. If anything remains owed to him, this can be determined “only through a preliminary settlement, for which it would be up to you to take the necessary steps and submit your supporting documents”…
