Pierre-Gilles de GENNES (1932–2007), Nobel Prize in Physics (1991). Autograph manuscript, “Mobile Chains + Rubber”; 6 pages, in-4 format, in pencil (on the back of printed folios). Physics demonstration with numerous calculations, particularly concerning the chain’s partition coefficient between the external and internal media; among the many mathematical formulas, the following points stand out: “Minimum density required to obtain a stretched brush”; “It is not enough for the bristles to be in contact to stretch”; “Interpenetration is always possible on a mesh”; “Rubber-to-rubber adhesion via free chains”… Attached is his printed paper, “Interdigitation between a Brush and Rubber,” [1994] (9 pp., in-4 format, and 2 plates).
