Claude MONET (1840–1926). Autograph letter, Giverny via Vern - Lot 231
Claude MONET (1840–1926). Autograph letter, Giverny via Vernon, January 27, 1890, to Arsène Alexandre; 3½ pages, in-8 format, in violet ink. A very fine letter about Manet, written in response to an article by Alexandre in *Le Paris* on January 20, and at a time when Monet had launched a fundraising campaign to donate *Olympia* to the Louvre. “Yes, I naively believe that, with his great talent and all he has done for modern art, Manet has the right to a place in the state collections, when so many second- and third-rate painters are represented there so extensively—even during their lifetimes. Yes, I naively believe he is entitled to redress, and I believe it would be very easy to achieve if all those who wield a pen—and who love beauty and justice—would support our campaign on behalf of Manet. To doubt that the government will accept our donation is to give it yet another reason to refuse. We must set aside the hatred and the prevailing stupidity, and courageously support the great artist that Manet was; that is the only way to make the administration reconsider. One should not think that the subscribers are merely vulgar Impressionists—failures, as they say—but rather the greatest and most renowned of artists; and I possess numerous letters of support that form a substantial dossier to which Messrs. Larroumet, Kaempffen, etc. should have no choice but to submit. So stand valiantly by Manet—there can be nothing but honor in doing so. Please excuse these remarks, which I allow myself only because of the sympathy you have often shown me and the admiration you have for the author of *Olympia*”…
