Léo LARGUIER (1878–1950). Autograph letter, November 12, [19 - Lot 374
Léo LARGUIER (1878–1950). Autograph letter, November 12, [1918], to an “old friend”; 3 pages, in-8. A moving letter written the day after the armistice of November 11, 1918. He welcomes this new peace with a heart full of sorrow and mistrust: “How we’ll have to make up for all that time wasted—time that could have been filled with friendship, good cheer, and work! It’s you I’m thinking of today. I am alone, empty-handed, dreadfully alone and a widower. Frankly, I wonder if it wouldn’t have been better to have stayed there. Now that it’s over, I regret it. I’m terrified of living. I’ve never felt so down as I do today. No doubt they’ll send me back to Germany again, like so many others, and I’m not ready to come back. […] Fauchois will read my “Victoire au Français” in a few days. We’ll have to think about finding me a place with you—a modest but secure haven. I’m counting only on you to save a spot for me, since I’m here and all my colleagues are over there. It’s going to be a mad rush—be on your guard. Ah! I don’t see peace through rose-colored glasses! Things we’ve waited too long for disappoint us once we have them. I’ve never seen so much mud, and I’ve been wearing the same shirt for two weeks. If my beautiful dead wife were here, I wouldn’t set foot in Paris again. You’d come see us in an old priory in the South, but all that’s coming to an end, and many things have already ended as well”…
