Philippe SOUPAULT (1897–1990). 2 signed autograph manuscript - Lot 406
Philippe SOUPAULT (1897–1990). 2 signed autograph manuscripts, [1957]; 1 page in-4 and 1 page in-8, in purple ink. On cinema and Abel Gance’s “Polyvision,” with commentary by Nelly Kaplan. “At a time when the art known as the seventh art is sinking into boredom, stupidity, or commercialized pornography, Polyvision brings us hope for a renaissance and a revolution in cinema. Polyvision is the best and most powerful expression of our era.” An eloquent assessment. “At least 200 million was spent on *Folies-Bergères*! At least 280 million on *God Created Woman*!!! At least 600 million on *Lola Montès*!!! These are just three examples; one could cite 100 more of the same sort. In contrast: For the Magirama-Polyvision program by Abel Gance and Nelly Kaplan—which, for impartial and honest critics, poets, and film technicians, represents one of the most important milestones in the history of cinema and, despite the meager resources made available to the creators of this program, a revolution in the art of cinema, it was grudgingly and reluctantly granted 18 million—not a penny more. One might ask: Who are they trying to fool? Will this last long? Can we kill Abel Gance and Nelly Kaplan?”
