MORAND (Paul). - Lot 177
MORAND (Paul).
Caribbean Winter. Documentary.
Paris: Ernest Flammarion, [1929]. — In-8, 183 x 175: 259 pp., (1 f.), printed cover. Orange half-maroquin with corner pieces, gilt fillets, ribbed spine decorated with gilt and mosaic motifs, gilt head, untrimmed, cover and spine preserved, slipcase (R. Blaizot).
First edition of this travelogue devoted to the West Indies.
This title, along with *Paris-Tombouctou* (1928) and the collection *Magie noire* (1928), forms part of the trilogy in which Morand explores cultures of African origin as they have dispersed across the globe (the United States, the West Indies, Africa). The book takes the form of a travel journal written during trips to the West Indies and America in 1927 and 1928. It includes, in particular, reflections on the Voodoo religion (especially in Haiti), political analyses, and observations on the Black populations of the Caribbean, their customs, beliefs, and culture, among other topics.
One of the first 65 copies printed on Japanese paper (no. 59), beautifully bound by Robert Blaizot.
Spine slightly faded; normal wear and tear on the edges and hinge of the front cover.
