SAINT-JOHN PERSE. - Lot 190
SAINT-JOHN PERSE.
…A Thousand Brides’ Heads…
n.p.: ADdA, [1987]. — Oblong 8vo, 150 x 210: (8 leaves; the first 2 and last 2 blank), printed cover. Loose-leaf, bound cover.
Artist’s book printed in an edition of 30 copies on vellum paper, illustrated with an original, unsigned, full-color engraving by Philippe GAROUSTE DE CLAUZADE (1922–2017). The text features a very short excerpt from *Amers* by Saint-John Perse.
Perse traveled to and lived in Africa on several occasions during his diplomatic career. His stays in Angola, Congo-Brazzaville, the Niger Delta, and Gabon left a lasting impression on his imagination. Although *Amers* focuses on maritime themes, his African experiences shine through in images of sand, dunes, and deserts.
Each copy bears the artist’s signature on the colophon. This copy is numbered 4; it is enhanced by an autographed inscription by Garouste on the first page:
To Claude Mozis // in the spirit of a // beautiful friendship // in Bazemont / Sept. 25, ’87 // Garouste
The copy is in very good condition despite some minor foxing in the margins.
