Pablo PICASSO (1881-1973)
Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) The “156 Series” One lot comprised of 155 etchings One lot – One auction Picasso – The 156 Series The so-called “156 Series” is the last one engraved by Picasso at the age of 90, between 1970 and 1972. The artist displays in it limitless energy and a mastery of the art of engraving, seconded in this venture by the faithful Crommelynck brothers. The etchings come in various formats, imagination is always prolific. These works were on display during a show organised by the Louise Leiris gallery between the 24th of January and the 24th of February 1973, a few weeks before the artist’s death on 8th of April 1973. On that occasion, the gallery published a small catalogue entitled Picasso, 156 gravures récentes reproducing all prints, including for some the progress of the work up to its final state. The Louise Leiris gallery issued the series in 1978, limited to 50 impressions. Each one is numbered in pencil (shown here n° 3/50) and bears the stamp of the signature (Lugt 2026e) – except for two of the prints, 74 and 83, that are signed in pencil by the artist. This series is very rarely found complete. Here it is in perfect condition, from the estate of the print dealer Henri M. Petiet (1894-1980). Our ensemble comprises 155 etchings out of the 156 from the series – since plate 7 is always missing. This subject (Baer 1867) was not printed because the copperplate was lost at some point. We therefore offer an ensemble in the most complete form that can be found.
