[GRASSET (Eugene)]. History of the four... - Lot 46 - Ader
[GRASSET (Eugene)]. History of the four Aymon sons, Very Noble and Very Valiant Knights. Illustrated with colour compositions by Eugène Grasset. Engraving and Printing by Charles Gillot. Introduction and Notes by Charles Marcilly. Paris: H. Launette, 1883. - In-4, 277 x 222: (3 ff.), 8 pp., (1 ff.), pp. 9-224, (8 ff.), under double cover printed and illustrated. Black morocco, bevelled edges of the plates, first plate decorated with a large chiselled leather composition signed HMM (Henri Marius Michel) representing a rich frame made of trophies and animals, inspired by the illustration of the book, title in the central cartouche, spine ribbed, black morocco frame inside, decorated with two gilt fillets, brick silk lining and endpapers, gilt edges , covers and spine preserved (Marius Michel). The most beautiful illustrated edition of this text inspired by a legend from the Middle Ages, decorated on each page with colour compositions by Eugène Grasset. This is the first book printed using the new photo-engraving and chromography process invented by Charles Gillot. The illustration breaks with the norm of the time, overflowing and overlapping the text. This work was recognized late as a precursor and herald of Art Nouveau. One of the 200 copies of the deluxe edition, this is one of the 100 numbered copies on Chinese paper (No. 191). Superb copy in a strictly chiselled binding of the period, designed by Marius Michel. A few scattered freckles, as is almost always the case with chinese copies.
