CAMPESTRE (Adélaïde de). Mémoires. Paris : chez l'éditeur, M. Antenor de Campestre, les marchands de nouveautés, 1827. - 2 volumes in-8, long-grained red half-maroquin with small corners, gilt and crowned numeral in the center of the boards, untrimmed (period binding). First edition of these memoirs by Adélaïde de Campestre (1780?-18..). "Daughter of a governor of Monaco, niece of the Countess de Neuilly, reader to the Queen, allied to M. de Saluces, governor of Turin, the Marquise de Campestre was, in 1826, sentenced to two years' imprisonment for fraud. Denounced by her cook, Julien, and by the oculist Faure, this notable adventuress was accused of having taken advantage of her connections - she had one of the busiest salons in Paris - to sell tickets and confidential information on the stock market" (Mémoire de Bourrienne, ed. 1895, p. XXXIII). These memoirs were written by Madame de Campestre during her captivity. They were published by her son Antenor. Faure published a reply in 1828. It is followed by "Plaidoyer de Me Moret, pour madame de Campestre, sténographié dans l'audience de la cour royale le 19 mars 1826". EXEMPLAIRE FROM THE LIBRARY OF EMPRESS MARIE-LOUISE (1791-1847), with her crowned gilt cipher on the boards. She is mentioned several times in the work. A very well preserved copy with full margins. Some brown spots.
