Pierre LOTI. Signed autograph manuscript, À Yann Nibor, [189 - Lot 289
Pierre LOTI. Signed autograph manuscript, À Yann Nibor, [1892] ; 2 pages large in-fol. (traces of framing, folds slits repaired). Preface to Yann Nibor's Songs and Tales of the Sea. The sailor Jean Robin, known as Yann Nibor (1857-1947), a native of St. Malo, after leaving active service, entered as a librarian in the Ministry of the Navy, and began to write sea stories and sailor songs that soon became popular. His Chansons et récits de mer, illustrated by Léon Couturier, with a preface by Pierre Loti, were published in 1893 by Marpon & Flammarion, and won the Prix Montyon 1894] "You have dedicated to me the first of your poignant songs ["Les Quatre-Frères et l'Ella"], of your songs that make good healthy tears flow, that make the strong cry. I thank you for that. The pleasure I feel is a bit like the pleasure I got from having my name inscribed on this wharf in Paimpol, - from where our Icelandic friends leave, sometimes never to return. And in return, you ask me to present your book to the public. ...] To those who have loved my sailors and fishermen, I have only to say, with sincere humility: read or sing these rough poems; they are even more faithful than anything I have dared to write. They are so much like that, that as I go through them, I seem to hear, as on board, brave voices, frank and abrupt, with a Breton accent, telling, talking, retorting in the honest slang of the sea, with those elisions that give speed and vigour. So many people try to paint sailors and so few succeed! [...] But you, in a little book that smells of salt, tar and sea breeze, you show them as they are, with their heroic devotion, with their rough delicacy and their adorable pity; with their dreams too - for, unlike the peasants ashore and the cheeky workers, sailors are, for the most part, great dreamers and unconscious poets without voice. Etc. At the bottom of the 2nd page, an original drawing by Léon Couturier (1842-1935), graph
